Beyond the Cycle: Empowering the Female Athlete

Unlock Performance of the Female Athlete thru Female Athlete-Centered Health Care

Dr. Reena Kumar

Today’s women athletes are stronger, faster and more visible than ever before. For too long, sports science and sports medicine have approached female athletes through models largely designed around male physiology and psychology. The result is a gap in complete understanding, prevention, care, and support of the female athlete.

The female athlete is not a smaller version of the male athlete. She has distinct endocrine, metabolic, biomechanical, nutritional, psychological and oral-systemic health needs. Recognizing these differences maximizes the performance health of women participating in athletics.

The way forward is integrated care. The female athlete benefits most when the team works together: sports physicians, dentists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning coaches, psychologists, gynecologists and coaches. Menstrual health monitoring, nutrition planning, injury-prevention protocols, oral-systemic screening and psychological support should become routine inclusions of an athlete’s participation.

Empowering women athletes means moving beyond generic protocols. It means listening to their bodies, studying their physiology, respecting their challenges and designing systems that help them thrive in a supportive environment. This includes respecting and understanding of woman’s physiology, menstrual-cycle awareness in addition to pregnancy, post-partum and menopausal dynamics. Health care for the female athlete also includes injury prevention and recovery, biomechanics, oral-facial health, psychological health, and evaluation for REDS (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport).

The future of sport will not progress by asking women athletes to fit into male athlete models. It will be built by updating sports medicine science and developing care protocols and performance pathways designed for women in sport.
